Dr. Avery
earned his medical doctorate from New York Medical College with distinction as the
recipient of the Giuffrida-Bizzarri award presented to the outstanding graduate
entering the field of anesthesiology.
Dr. Avery completed his medical internship at California Pacific Medical
Center-University of California at San Francisco and both his anesthesiology
residency training and cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship at the
Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)-Harvard Medical School. Upon completion of
his post-doctoral training in 2000 Dr. Avery worked for near a decade as a
staff cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital
where he earned further distinction as the youngest individual to ever be
appointed as the Chief of the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia. As an individual
recognized for his outstanding teaching skills he is the recipient of multiple
teaching awards and during his tenure at the MGH Dr. Avery helped to make the
cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship among the best in the country. Dr. Avery
has also distinguished himself at the MGH as the most prolific clinical trials
researcher in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care where he served as
a key investigator on over a dozen clinical trials, many of which he co-authored.
In 2010 Dr. Avery was recruited to join the faculty of the Department of
Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical
Center (UHCMC) where he continues to both author and execute clinical trials
that relate to improving the clinical care of patients with advanced
cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Avery
spends the majority of his time providing clinical care to UHCMC’s
cardiothoracic and vascular surgery patients. He has authored over 30 original
manuscripts, book chapters, monographs and abstracts. Dr. Avery has delivered
over 100 presentations at local, regional, national and international medical
meetings. He has served as an ad hoc editor for the journals Anesthesia and Analgesia as well as Transfusion. Dr. Avery is an active
member of several hospital committees that include the UHCMC Transfusion
Committee and the UHCMC Heart Failure and Transplant Committee. Additionally,
Dr. Avery continues his clinical research work and provides regular
consultation services to biomedical industry that relate to developing new
drugs, devices and biological assays. Specifically, he has developed expertise
in trial design that includes the subtopics of patient selection, methodology
and overall executability of clinical protocols in hospitalized patients.
Ed advises SSI Strategy on issues related to clinical trials design and execution
(feasibility and endpoint selection), ensuring patient safety in clinical
trials, analysis of specific safety issues and KOL interaction and engagement.
